"In addition to developing new technologies, we help our customers transition to sustainable energy production by modernizing their existing facilities and technologies," say SFW's Vice President, Strategy & Marketing Stefan Nygård (left) and CEO Tomas Harju-Jeanty.

Sumitomo SHI FW, or SFW, is a Japanese-owned global company headquartered in Espoo, Finland, with a history closely connected to Finland's industrial heritage. Today, the company is owned by Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd, while its technology roots trace back to the heavy industry and boiler technology expertise of A. Ahlström corporation.

Approximately 90% of SFW's business comes from international markets. The company's 1,600 employees and 19 offices across four continents are managed from Finland.

At the moment, together with approximately 50 partner companies, we are developing a network of solutions for carbon-free energy. The Net Zero Energy Ecosystem (NZEE) is unique because it does not focus on a single technology or emissions reduction solution. Instead, it creates a fully integrated energy ecosystem
Tomas Harju-Jeanty
CEO, SFW

As part of this work, SFW serves as one of Business Finland's leading ecosystem companies.

The current geopolitical situation has highlighted our vulnerability regarding energy supply. High energy prices affect all of us in our daily lives. There is a growing need to create secure, carbon-neutral energy by making use of domestic resources.
Stefan Nygård
VP Strategy & Marketing, SFW

"The NZEE program aims to enable renewable energy production, sustainable transportation fuels, and the storage and utilization of surplus energy", Nygård continues.

The hydrogen economy has often been proposed as a solution. However, hydrogen alone is not enough. A broader portfolio of technologies and solutions is needed.

"We must be able to produce energy competitively if we want to achieve real change. In addition, supportive regulation and incentives are naturally required," Harju-Jeanty notes.

SFW provides technologies for renewable fuels and energy production that are already capable of competing economically with fossil fuel alternatives. Going forward, these technologies will also play an important role in the hydrogen economy.

Accordion

  • Through gasification, biomass and waste can be converted into syngas, which can then be used to produce biomethanol as well as sustainable marine and aviation fuels.

  • SFW’s Liquid Air Energy Storage technology enables energy to be stored for extended periods. This can help balance the intermittent generation of wind and solar power.

  • SFW provides carbon capture, utilization and storage solutions, particularly for the energy sector and heavy industries, with the goal of enabling even carbon-negative solutions.

  • SFW integrates energy generation, energy storage, sustainable fuel production and carbon capture into efficient, optimized energy systems, supported by comprehensive lifecycle services.
