Sumitomo SHI FW collaborates with Siemens Energy to advance Long Duration Energy Storage market with technology that uses clean air

PRESS RELEASE, 10 July 2024, 12:00

Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW) and Siemens Energy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development of Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) solutions for the global market.

SFW and Siemens Energy will work together to advance the development, cooperation, sales, and services regarding LAES, a technology that stores energy using a freely available and clean resource – air. Siemens Energy will particularly contribute profound technical and commercial know-how in turbines, generators and compressors to jointly create a comprehensive, efficient solution for the operation and maintenance of LAES plants.

The MoU outlines the framework for possible future detailed agreements concerning the supply of Siemens Energy equipment for LAES projects developed by SFW. It involves the establishment of a joint taskforce, comprising experts from both companies. The taskforce will explore the scope of potential LAES projects.

The LAES solution provides long duration energy storage of greater than 8 hours. It enables renewable integration as well as ensures grid stability, energy security and sustainability, which are becoming a challenge for many of the world’s power grids. Through this collaboration, we are realizing the vision of reaching net zero targets and decarbonizing the energy grids by providing sustainable, reliable and flexible renewable energy 24/7

SFW is a subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI), a leading investor and technology partner of Highview Power (HP) since 2020. SHI’s commercial demonstration plant based on HP’s LAES (liquid air energy storage) technology at Hiroshima Gas’ Hatsukaichi plant in Japan will come online in May 2025. In June 2024, HP has started UK’s first commercial-scale LAES project with an output of 50 MW for 6-hour duration in Carrington, UK.
