In many Asian countries, power producers are turning to low quality solid fuels as they face increasing pressure to generate low-cost power. They are finding that fuel-flexible circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology can capture both the largest fuel cost savings and largest carbon emission reductions by co-firing biomass and other carbon neutral waste fuels. This flexibility can also improve fuel security by expanding fuel procurement strategies across both domestic and import fuel markets.

Circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology has steadily increased its power generation market share in Asia principally because of the technology’s inherent ability to fire the widest range of fuels, such as Indonesian coals and lignites, high ash Vietnamese anthracite, low quality Indian coals and lignites, petcokes, coal washing rejects, biomass, rice husks, demolition wood and many other fuels in variable mix combinations.
An important added benefit is CFB’s clean burning process which can avoid expensive air pollution control equipment. This allows CFB plants to reach levels of emissions, reliability, plant capital and operating cost well beyond today’s fleet of pulverized coal (PC) power plants. For consumers, this means reliable, clean power at the lowest possible cost.
Conventional pulverized coal (PC) boilers struggle when burning fuels outside their tight fuel specifications, particularly fuels with varying moisture and ash content. To broaden their fuel range, PC plant designers will oversize the boiler, increase soot blowing, use more expensive alloys, and increase maintenance cycles which ultimately negate the cost saving of using the off-spec fuels.
