South African power producers require low cost, environmentally clean yet very reliable baseload power generation that can leverage South Africa’s vast indigenous coal resources. Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) Boiler Technology has increased its world-wide presence principally due to its highly-desirable fuel ﬂexibility feature combined with signiﬁcantly reduced air emissions, particularly SOx, NOx and even CO2. The CFB’s fuel ﬂexible and low emissions design provide South African power producers the ability to utilize the lowest cost coal, petcoke, coal slurry, lignite, washery rejects and biomass in variable mix combinations, to produce the lowest possible power cost for South African consumers.

Who Should Attend?
CFB technology also oﬀers several additional commercial advantages. Its inherent low emissions design avoids the cost of installing and operating expensive DeNOx and DeSOx ﬂue gas cleaning equipment while conserving water, another valuable natural resource.
Combining ultra-supercritical CFB boiler technology with biomass co-ﬁring allows plant owners to realize dramatic reductions in net CO2 emissions while keeping electricity production reliability high and cost low. Long-term operating data clearly demonstrates that CFB clean coal technology has a lower forced and planned outage rate and thus higher reliability than conventional coal and biomass combustion technologies. All these beneﬁts should be very attractive for the South African energy industry.
The CFB boiler option can be applied to both new greenﬁeld plants, as well as, existing plants as a repowering option. Repowering the steam side of an existing or retired coal-ﬁred plant is a much lower cost option than building a new greenﬁeld plant since a lot of the plant’s existing infrastructure can be reused, yet the same improvements to the plant operating cost, reliability and environmental performance can be achieved.

Robert Giglio and Asif Hussain will review the technical, economic and environmental beneﬁts of CFB boilers and the value they can bring to the South African power market. Plant case studies relevant to the South African market and fuels will be presented, such as:
Korea’s 2,200 MWe Samcheok Green Power Project(4 x 550 MWe), uses SFW’s ultra-supercritical CFB technology. Topics of special interest to South African power developers include the unique plant design features that give KOSPO, the plant owner, the greatest possible ﬂexibility in fuel procurement. This important design feature now saves KOSPO millions of dollars in fuel cost each year of operation.
Turkey’s 450 MWe Soma Kolin(2 x 225 MWe), is a project under construction using SFW CFB technology that will eﬃciently burn locally-procured very low-quality Turkish lignite. This is an important example for South African power developers who are constrained to using low quality coals and washery rejects yet are challenged by regulators to meet low air emission limits while producing aﬀordable and reliable electricity.
The 1,500 MWe CFB repowering project in Turow, Poland. Six old PC boilers where replaced by 6 SFW CFBs resulting in a 25% increase in plant output, while achieving over a 90% reduction in all plant emissions.
Many other case studies relevant to the African power sector will also be reviewed during the seminar, such as the 554 MWe Oil Shale CFB plant in Jordan and the 670 MWe Waste Coal & Biomass CFB plant in Virginia.

Robert is responsible for market, product, technology and business strategy, globally for SFW. Robert started his career over 30 years ago with a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Asif Hussain | Senior VP of Strategic Business Development | Sumitomo SHI FW
Asif Hussain is responsible for business development within Africa, Middle East and Indian sub-continent. He has over 23 years experience in the power industry and markets based on extensive experience gained working for Foster Wheeler and Babcock Power in roles as ﬁeld service engineer, project engineering, sales & marketing and management serving the utility and Industrial market. He has a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Maryland as well as leadership & management training.
