Petroleum coke (petcoke) is produced by deep recovery oil refineries using delayed coking technology. It is a high energy fuel priced below coal, making it very attractive to energy intensive industries, like cement, power, glass, and steel. Circulating fluidized bed technology has enabled petcoke’s growing use in power and steam production since it can cleanly and reliably extract the heat energy from petcoke despite its low volatility, high metal and sulfur levels.
The tightening of maritime fuel sulfur limits by the IMO is expected to drive further use of petcoke in the power and cogeneration sector. As refineries move away from the HSFO market, those with delayed coking capacity will take advantage of discounts to sour crudes with a side result of producing more petcoke. Instead of selling the petcoke into markets with falling prices, building a petcoke power or cogeneration plant would allow refiners to avoid both the HSFO and petcoke markets while securing their long-term future energy needs.
